So... Been a while since I wrote up some review, huh?
Well, here's a few from recent purchases:
1. M-Flo: Expo Expo (4/5)
Prior to this album, I wasn't really that familiar with M-Flo's sound from before Lisa left. It's definately different from what's on Astromantic. More chill and a lot more R&B than party in my opinion. Anyway, I enjoyed this album, but unlike Astromantic/Astromantic Charm School, I can definately say that I like the remix version better (Exposition Bouei Robot Gran Sonik). If you decideto get this album, you definately won't be dissapointed, I just suggest getting one of the others first.
2. M-Flo: Sotoshigoto- M-Flo Turns It Out! (5/5)
This one's a two-disc set where M-Flo took some music form some other J-pop (and otherwise) groups and did their own production/remixing on them. This album is excellent. It covers the full spectrum of musical genres, and the quality of the music is just awesome. I'd actually recommend getting this album before the others. favorite tracks are:
Ajapai vs Verbal from M-Flo- Beach Star High
K featuring verbal from m-flo- The Love Hole
YMO- Behind The Mask (Farewell, Mr. S3000 Remix)
Ram Jam World- Planet Earth
(Japanese Name I can't read)- Violet Nude (m-flo's Soulstice Mix)
So yeah, if you feel like something new, DEFINATELY get that one.
3.Joujouka- Re-Model (2/5)
It would be unfair to say I was dissapointed with this one. The music on it is actually really good. It's just it's not what I was expecting. A lot of the album is instrumental versions (or barely remixed versions) of songs on Are You Elovetric? (which, by the way, was an EXCELLENT album). I was just expecting something different from Joujouka.
4.Misia- Singer For Singer (4/5)
Again, Misia stays true to her style but manages to twist it into an experience completely different from her other albums. When I listened to this album, I just kept getting images of a walk out in the park. It's a pretty cheery-sounding, happy album. Although you won't hear other singers really on this album, she worked on each track with another artist in the industry. I still think Kiss In The Sky is my favorite from her, but this one's another really good album.
At this point, I need to retract something I said in another review. Previously, I had said that I didn't much care for the album before this one, Mars & Roses. I think I just hadn't been listening to it closely enough when I said that. I've gone back and listened to it a lor more recently, and it's actually a really good CD, especially the first couple tracks and the duet with Erykah Badu. (Yeah, you read right.)
5.Misia- Remix 2002- World Peace (4/5)
This one's the remix version of her Marvelous CD, much like remix 2003 is the remix of Kiss In The Sky. Like the 2003 one, this album has a lot of good tracks. The overall themes are usually slightly latin and slightly jazzy. (Of course, there are a few differently-styled songs to mix it up like vocal trance, etc.) I like Remix 2003 slightly better simply because it seems to have a lot more production coordination, but this one's got some great tracks as well.
6.Namie Amuro- Style (5/5)
I actually picked this one up a while ago. I may even have reviewed it already and forgotten. Anyway, when I first listened to it, I didn't like it that much. The attitude seemed a little forced and the R&B style just didn't seem to fit her image to me. But I gave it some more listens, and now I love the CD. Especially the tracks Namie's Style, So Crazy, Lovebite, Four Seasons, Fish (w/ Verbal & Arkitec), and Come. This album really is very, very good.
I've also gotten into the habit lately of collecting Ayumi's singles. I won't review all of those, but for those interested, I let you know what my fave picks are:
Evolution, Kanariya, Surreal (which actually has Duty remixes, but they couldn't name an album AND a single Duty ), and Unite!
Alright, well, I'm out. Prolly won't have more reviews for a while. Been buying too much J-pop lately to keep it up.
