Yep. I have their greatest hits album. Their sound is very popish, though at times they like to get into a little R&B and at others they like to use a Euro feel. They also seem to copy the instrumental parts of other popular songs and put them into their own. Like one song has part of the techno song "Heart of Asia" and on another song, the music is that "Backstreet's Back" song from Backstreet Boys the whole way through. I refuse to listen to that song. But all in all, they're pretty good. They have this really catchy song that was apparently one of their big hits called "Tora Tora Tora." Although, I thought Domino originally did that one, so who knows.

MAX stood for Music Active eXperience. They were originally called SUPER MONKEYS with Namie Amuro as a member.
MAX sang J-Euro versions of some Eurobeat songs, much like Dream did with some songs.
The following are ones I recognize: "Seventies" by Dave Rodgers/Mega NRG Man "Tora Tora Tora" by Domino "Kiss to Kiss" by Mako "Summertime" by Annalise

MAX stood for Music Active e Xperience. They were originally called SUPER MONKEYS with Namie Amuro as a member. But they were named after Max Matsuura, the music producer. Anyway, Max is the first Jpop group I ever got into! I bought Maximum Collection at the beginning of 2000, when YesAsia was still called AsiaCD.com. I loved the song "Tora Tora Tora." But now I don't really like them as much, since I don't like R&B.

woooo~ MAX. cassandra's favorite jpop group always and forever. very brief history of MAX :: nana and mina were in the first incarnation of the SUPER MONKEY'S after several others coming and going reina and lina joined and formed Namie Amuro with SUPER MONKEY'S. but future MAX basically became back up dancers and avex focused more on namie. and then namie joined with TK(Komuro Tetsuya) and left for a solo career. the four then became MAX which as stated above comes from Musical Active eXperience and is a tribute to Max Masato. They started out with a euro feel but by the second album, that was gone. MAX developed a true pop beat and began changing and experimenting with their sound. as for MAX and R&B they experimented with it for a few songs when it first became popular but don't have an R&B sound anymore. and they haven't for a LONG time. as for borrowing or covers, yes MAX has done quite a few covers, what band hasn't. Barairo no Hibi, which has the backing music only from the backstreet boys hit, was rumored to be a project that MAX did NOT want to be involved with, but was an avex desired hit. personally I love the song. in 2002, mina left the group to have a baby and be married. avex then gave them the choice of adding a member or dissolving the group. they chose to add a member, aki formally of the group Hipps. MAX wanted to write their first comeback song, eternal white, but they didn't have the time so nana wrote all of the rap lyrics for the song. they have written songs before (they wrote and produced both never gonna stop it and MAGIC). MAX has a single out on 6/30 called Be with You www.cdjapan.co.jp/detailview.html?KEY=AVCD-30596, a cover of the atomic kitten version. if you want to check out MAX's most popular songs, they are :: tora tora tora give me a shake ride on time isshoni if you want more reccomendations let me know. I can talk about MAX all day. as for the convention, I will definitly be there! I have already reserved a hotel room and gotten registered. I can't wait. three months to go! -end MAX fan rambling on and on-

I have kinda noticed that some Japanese groups do tend to cover or "borrow" too much. An example is Dragon Ash - Attention. The whole backing track is stolen from a song by Fatboy Slim. I find this appalling. Another example is Dream's album, "Dream World". Nearly every song, or even all the songs, on the album are cover versions! To be honest, I'd be quite disappointed if Move did a cover version, as there is very little talent in it at all. It's just someone else singing another person's song. I suppose it could be called Commercial Karaoke! ;D

It's not just Japanese groups, though. Everyone and their mother in China and Korea (and even Vietnam, I've found out recently) ends up copying Lee Jung Hyun's (a Korean pop-star) music at least once. Being a fan of hers, it bugs the crap out of me.

I've mentioned in a thread (that I've deleted) that Nana Katase's newest mini-album "Extended" is nothing but 80's songs just remade.
I've heard BoA's "Valenti" song in Vietnamese!
HK singers uses a lot of English songs. The earliest one I've heard during my childhood is one made from Madonna's "Material Girl". The worst C-Pop cover I've heard so far must be Sally Yip's "My Heart Will Go On" in Cantonese.
I've also heard Angie Gold's "Eat You Up" song in Cantonese, Japanese, and Vietnamese.
Maybe we should start a thread that lists these imitation/cover songs!

yeah MAX has been around for a while. I remember hearing them in 97' along with a little band called Globe from a friend who introduced me to japanese music along with cd burners and the mp3 format.

"Little band called Globe?" I don't think there's anything little about Globe, at least when it comes to their popularity and influence. And about Yuri's cover of Midnight Shadow (The Shooting Star)- That was a one-time deal that I feel was just special for that CD. Max has a recurring theme of doing covers or borrowing music. They still have good original songs, and their covering doesn't really bother me (except for the song with the Backstreet Boys music), but it is kinda something that defines their music.

oh yeah, remember Move or more specifically Yuri did a cover song on the Cyber X cd. Yes, it was a poor song anyway ;D I was very annoyed that they did not give her a new song to sing.
