anyone know why Takumi's 86 has a black hood in the intro? Throughout all the series of Initial D, Takumi has a black hood in certain scenes, But I know Project D gives him a carbon hood soon in 4th Stage, maybe next episode?

Carbon Fibre = Lightweight Fibreglass Type Material It lightens his car by a whole lot, most D1 cars and race cars are made with carbon everything now.

Carbon Fiber is lightweight but not much stronger than fiberglass. To give an example, a normal hood with the skeleton would weigh roughly 42 LBs., the same setup with carbon fiber would be close to 7 LBs.
Although that is a great weight reduction, most street racers use it as something to show off. It is truely effective when the WHOLE car body is made of it, taking 100's of LBs. off like pro racing cars.
BTW, carbon fiber shatters easily if hit had enough.

Wow! I'm amazed with your knowledge about cars!! I wish I could learn more about them! I love cars and I would love to know a lot about them but I don't know where to learn... That's one of the many reasons I love Initial D: they usually explain technical stuff so you can learn a little. But you guys rule! ^^

from what I learnt, carbon fiber is nicely rigid for its weight, but this rigidity make it fragile and chatter when it comes to break.
carbon hood can also help to lower the gravity center
